Homemade Cabbage Rolls

These homemade cabbage rolls are a classic dish that's full of flavor and nostalgia. Made with a savory meat and rice filling, wrapped in tender cabbage leaves, and baked in a tangy tomato sauce, they're a comforting meal that's just like Grandma used to make.


#### Ingredients:


- 1 medium head cabbage (about 3 pounds)

- 1/2 pound uncooked ground beef

- 1/2 pound uncooked ground pork

- 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce, divided

- 1 small onion, chopped

- 1/2 cup uncooked long grain rice

- 1 tablespoon dried parsley flakes

- 1/2 teaspoon salt

- 1/2 teaspoon snipped fresh dill or dill weed

- 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

- 1 can (14-1/2 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained

- 1/2 teaspoon sugar


#### Directions:


1. **Prepare the Cabbage:** Cook the cabbage in boiling water just until the outer leaves pull away easily from the head. Set aside 12 large leaves for rolling. Cut out the thick vein from the bottom of each leaf to make a V-shaped cut.


2. **Make the Filling:** In a small bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, 1/2 cup of tomato sauce, chopped onion, uncooked rice, dried parsley flakes, salt, dill, and cayenne pepper. Mix well to combine.


3. **Assemble the Cabbage Rolls:** Place about 1/4 cup of the meat mixture onto a cabbage leaf. Fold in the sides of the leaf and roll it up, starting from the cut end. Repeat with the remaining cabbage leaves and filling.


4. **Prepare the Sauce:** Slice the remaining cabbage and place it in the bottom of a Dutch oven. Arrange the cabbage rolls seam side down over the sliced cabbage. In a separate bowl, combine the diced tomatoes, remaining tomato sauce, and sugar. Pour this sauce mixture over the cabbage rolls.


5. **Bake:** Cover the Dutch oven and bake the cabbage rolls at 350°F (175°C) until they are tender, about 1 1/2 hours.


6. **Serve:** Once the cabbage rolls are cooked through and tender, serve them hot, garnished with chopped parsley if desired.
