Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers

These Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers are a delicious and easy way to enjoy a classic American burger. Thinly sliced onions are smashed into the beef patties, creating a caramelized crust that is simply irresistible. 


#### Ingredients:


- 1 large onion, peeled, halved, and thinly sliced

- Salt and pepper

- 1 lb ground beef

- 1 tablespoon butter

- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

- 4-8 slices American cheese

- Mayo, mustard, and pickles, for serving

- 4 hamburger buns, toasted


#### Instructions:


1. **Prepare the Onions:**

   - Combine the onion slices with 1 teaspoon of salt in a bowl and toss to coat. 

   - Transfer the onions to a colander and let sit for 30 minutes, tossing occasionally to release liquid.

   - Transfer the onions to a clean dish towel, gather the edges, and squeeze out as much liquid as possible.


2. **Form the Patties:**

   - Divide the onions into 4 separate mounds on a rimmed baking sheet.

   - Form the ground beef into 4 lightly packed balls and place them on top of the onion mounds.

   - Flatten the beef balls firmly with your palm so the onions adhere to the beef, forming patties about 4 inches in diameter.

   - Season the patties generously with salt and pepper.


3. **Cook the Burgers:**

   - Melt the butter with the oil in a 12-inch skillet over medium heat.

   - Using a large spatula, transfer the patties to the skillet, onion side down.

   - Cook for 6-8 minutes, until the onions are deeply golden and begin to crisp around the edges.

   - Flip the burgers and increase the heat to high. Cook for about 2 minutes until the second side is well browned.


4. **Add Cheese:**

   - Add 1 or 2 slices of American cheese to each burger and allow it to melt.


5. **Assemble the Burgers:**

   - Spread mayo, mustard, and pickles on the top buns.

   - Place each burger on a bottom bun and top with the dressed top bun.


6. **Serve:**

   - Serve the burgers immediately while they are hot and enjoy!
