These Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers are a delicious and easy way to enjoy a classic American burger. Thinly sliced onions are smashed into the beef patties, creating a caramelized crust that is simply irresistible.
#### Ingredients:
- 1 large onion, peeled, halved, and thinly sliced
- Salt and pepper
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 4-8 slices American cheese

- 4 hamburger buns, toasted
#### Instructions:
1. **Prepare the Onions:**
- Combine the onion slices with 1 teaspoon of salt in a bowl and toss to coat.
- Transfer the onions to a colander and let sit for 30 minutes, tossing occasionally to release liquid.
- Transfer the onions to a clean dish towel, gather the edges, and squeeze out as much liquid as possible.
2. **Form the Patties:**
- Divide the onions into 4 separate mounds on a rimmed baking sheet.
- Form the ground beef into 4 lightly packed balls and place them on top of the onion mounds.
- Flatten the beef balls firmly with your palm so the onions adhere to the beef, forming patties about 4 inches in diameter.
- Season the patties generously with salt and pepper.
3. **Cook the Burgers:**
- Melt the butter with the oil in a 12-inch skillet over medium heat.

- Flip the burgers and increase the heat to high. Cook for about 2 minutes until the second side is well browned.

- Spread mayo, mustard, and pickles on the top buns.
- Place each burger on a bottom bun and top with the dressed top bun.
